Well, just back from 2 weeks in the loverly flat Netherlands riding my Batavus around in very relaxed fashion sans helmet on wonderful segregated bike lanes. 270 miles of cycling heaven. Those Dutch folk are spoiled rotten!
Back out on the road in the good old UK today I found my Bianchi incredibly twitchy, missed the cycle lanes, hated the proximity of the cars, the hills were harder than I remember and I was generally very uncomfortable with things for a few miles till reality set back in. I didn't wear my helmet tho and that felt good!

Cycling in Holland can be good and the absence of hills is a bonus but the wind can very often be a bit of a nuisance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've had 3 holidays in Holland, 2 of them in Centre Parcs. As above, cycling is a different world, very friendly people - they are all cyclists after all

One of the holidays was also the shortest I've ever driven to get to the resort (circa 30 miles from the ferry, and the ferry is only a mile away from my house). After this years trip to Padstow (380 miles) think theres a good chance of heading back there next year.

Incidentally my kids started calling Padstow 'Padstein' as Rick Stein seems to own most of it.

That was our first reason for trying Holland. Short hop to the Hull ferry, kip and dinner on the boat and half an hour to Delft the other side rather than 5 or 6 to Poole followed by the trail across France. Our last trip down there was to St Emilion and we did it over three days, exhausted before we started! Getting lazieir in me old age. Just much more relaxing without the stress of hours at the wheel.

Yep, frustrating when you're struggling into a headwind and a 100 year old guy breezes past smokin a fag on his electric bike!
