Have any of you tried making your own ice cream? Not with an ice cream maker, but with a whisk and putting it in the freezer, rewhisking etc.

I saw a recipe today for home made chocolate ice cream. Is it worth, taste-wise, making your own ice cream? All the shop-bought ones are either very expensive or taste horrible IMO. Any advice gratefully received.
Thank you

Lots of nice flavour experiments to be had ... one of my children wanted an ice cream maker for her birthday this year (and I thought that could be useful so why not).

So far we have tried cookie dough, vanilla, raspberry, apple and mango, and mint (real mint).

In the past I have made an amaretto sorbet that was delicious but I've lost the recipe to that one. And fizzy wines can make good sorbets too!!!

You also get to think about the fat content ... do you want to make it with cream, eggs, yoghurt, etc.

We are still at the early stages of it, but must brew up another batch this weekend.

I definitely would not want to put eggs in it. Yoghurt sounds good. I would only make small quantities, and have plenty of tubs etc. I might try fruit ice cream with raspberries, strawberries, etc when the pick your own season starts.

I was in a restaurant offering asparagus ice cream, but I think that is a step too far!

One of my friends always cooks a lovely Christmas meal for us ... and this year for those brave enough ... there was brussels sprout ice cream. Strangely enough I didn't try that.

Made some strawberry ice cream once; it didn't really taste of strawberries until we added some fresh orange juice. It must have been the aldehydes in the juice, bringing out the flavour.

In work(millets) you can get this plastic ball thing, that you add the ingredients in and throw around/shake and it makes ice cream apparently.
I cant find them on the Millets website, so im not sure if we have stopped doing them, but i guess if they work then it would be a way of doing it.

My wife's recipe is very simple, you just mix the ingredients together and put it in the freezer. She's out tonight but I'll ask her about it tomorrow.

She does vanilla, chocolate, mint choc chip and maybe strawberry. The ice-cream is very thick, creamy and rich, everyone loves it. Not at all good for a diet! ;0)

Thank you Mr Pig. I would like a simple one to try that does not use raw eggs, or preferably not eggs in any form. Mint choc chip or strawberry sounds good. Please also ask her how long it keeps in the freezer, provided it is left in the freezer ;) and not scoffed.

Who do I know who scoffs ice cream. ;)
