As always on a Sunday i am out on my bike enjoying the sights and sounds of Birmingham and last Sunday I was with a group of about 8 other cyclists and we were heading towards the village of Barston which was about 2 miles outside of Knowle.

We were mainly on A roads for the first 4 or 5 miles but soon changed to country roads which were very narrow and about the same width as a tractor but very quiet and tranquil to cycle along. A few miles later a motorist came along and upon seeing a lot of cyclists in front of them on a narrow road proceeded to press his car horn to make us aware of them so we slowed down and moved over so they could pass safely.

Later on as we were sitting outside in the gardens of a local pub eating our lunch, with a donkey next to us and the roar of planes overhead coming in to land at Birmingham Airport, (that's another post for a later Blog), I started thinking of all the different words for when somebody presses their horn in a car, for instance Hooting or Honking or Pipping or Blasting, and to be honest, I have never liked the sound of "that car just pipped his horn at me", doesn't sound right to me and never will, I just want to giggle like a silly schoolboy when I hear that sentence.

Inevitably when I got home later I Googled all the words that people use for car horn use and came up with the following:-
Honking - a representation of the sound made by a goose
Hooting - Make loud sounds of scorn, disapproval, or merriment
Pipping - Cracking of a shell
Blasted - Strike with divine anger

Put all that together and you have - A goose making loud sounds of scorn whilst cracking a shell with either merriment or disapproval and doing it with divine anger (just take a moment to picture that in your head)

Brilliant, that will make me chuckle the next time somebody in a car hoots their horn at me when I am out on my bike and i get that image in my head!!!!!

So remember, the next time YOU sound your horn at a cyclist and as you pass you see them laughing don't be worried or concerned, its me, just carry on and ignore me.

Dont Forget-
I am doing a 176 mile cycle ride from Birmingham to Oxford on July 1st & 2nd for charity so please donate if possible.

Right first time Mr Phoebus and a lovely pub it was too, just the donkey was making too much noise and i will have to remember blaring next time

It's a really popular pub with cycling groups and clubs.
It's very rare on a Sunday If I pass by it and there isn't any cyclists there.

What's the difference between a bad marksman and a constipated owl?

A bad marksman shoots and can't hit....
