I would have thought the horizontal tabs are for extra security when set in the concrete.

from having watched my dad excavate numerous clothes poles from our back garden after they've been pulled down in a wind, I don't think that extra bit of metal would make much difference as the only thing that will get them out is probably a tank.

it's normal practice to shorten the length of street furniture to allow for the depth of hole (there may be utility pipes below)

if your unsure, give the rack a good kick and see if it moves.

I'm lucky that my work has a basement I can store my bike in, but the new proposed office doesn't :sad:

I think it has some cycle stands nearby, but I'm really worried about locking my bike up outside, especially since I've just whacked out a fair amount on a new one.

Time for insurance I think...

Bleh!

I do use them occasionally but we also have underground secure parking that I use most of the time. Even in there the bike gets locked up very securely. I don't like leaving it outside all day.
