...that is, the transplant organs, urgent top secret documents or urgently needed rare group blood that the cyclists I saw in Crewe were obviously carrying, given their evident hurry.

Cyclist 1 was a gent on a flat bar, who started on the road, couldn't be bothered to wait for red and so hopped up onto the cycle path without looking, proceeded to bully the peds out of the way, and then rejoined the road to run the red at the big roundabout on Crewe road (where I was waiting to cross at the toucan). Fortunately, my new policy of expecting everyone else to be an utter selfish c*** worked well here, and I decided to wait until he'd jumped the red before taking advantage of a light that was in my favour.

No sooner had I crossed the road than another cyclist jumped another red (again, a toucan I was ready to cross at, with the light in my favour).

So I get on to Crewe Green road, waiting at ANOTHER toucan (Crewe's cycle paths are cleverly designed to allow you to practice short intervals) and another cyclist crosses against the light (fair enough, as toucan's are only advisory, as I understand matters). However, what seemed to me to be less fair enough was that, on finding the traffic busier than he'd anticipated, he rode down the wrong side of the road, then veered to the left hand carriageway in front of a car (quick reactions by the driver averted a crash, by the looks of the brake lights), shortly before turning right.

Not seen any of them before, but all had decent gear, and pretty good looking bikes, suggesting that they weren't folk who'd only just taken to the road that week.

It seems to be distinctly unfashionable to follow traffic law these days, far more so than I remember it being last year.

One nearly took me out yesterday as I walked out of the office - going the wrong way up a one way street on the pavement.

Doesn't it warm your heart that these vital delivery cyclists take such risks to get their valuable cargo to its destination? :bicycle:

Not wishing to condone these cyclists' behaviour (and your experience sounds like a day in the life down here in London, :welcome:) but does the extensive array of toucans you described actually make the situation worse?

As they're set up currently, they make your journey out of the city far slower (I've timed myself using the roads (and obeying the traffic signals) and using the paths, and using the road is near enough twice as fast[1]). That's largely a matter of design though - the phasing could easily be changed to favour cyclists, at present it favours the convenience of the motorists on the adjacent roads.

If you mean do they make the chance of colliding with some scofflaw light ignorer higher, I suppose they do, as ordinarily I'd be in the flow of traffic myself, not crossing it.

[1] I don't use the road unless it's necessary because of ice/frost etc (the roads get gritted, the paths don't), as there's a person in a red Audi who attempts to teach the errant cyclist a lesson about being on the cycle path, using his vehicle as the teaching tool. (This happened twice last year - definitely the same vehicle and the same guy). For the sake of five minutes on the journey to the station, it just doesn't seem worth the aggravation.

Well, he's certainly taught you the right lesson. Surely a report or three to the police would be worth doing, and or some video of his behaviour?

This is 6:20am Mikey, no witnesses, his word against mine - I know where that goes. The cam is a good idea, and something I've been intending to pick up at sometime that I have a few quid to spare...

Had it happened on the long bit of my commute, I'd feel a bit more militant about it, but given that it's the last half of the two miles to the station, I'd sooner not take the risk.

If you don't report it, nothing will definitely happen. He'll carry on with that sort of disgusting behaviour and might kill or injure another cyclist.

Sorry to give you a hard time, but that stuff steams me up incredibly!!! I can't believe how irresponsible the driver is.

I guess what I was meaning is that some of the cyclists might rationalise their behaviour because of the inordinate amount of the time they would have to stop and wait if they used the crossings correcltly - that is, if I am understanding the scenario. And obviously some of them may not be the types of people who rationalise their behaviour, in any event.

However I am with BM that you should take action if you encounter your self-appointed enforcer in his Audi again.

One of these might be the order of the day. Whilst adding some extra weight to you and your bike, thus increasing your journey time, it may be helpful in any polite and reasoned discussion you may wish to have with said Audi driver.

Ah, I see. At the point that the jumped, they're on the road, not using paths and toucans. It's that that puts folk at the toucans at risk (imo) - yes, they should look before crossing on the green, but thy should have a reasonable expectation that people would stop. (If I'd not waited for my two rlj'ers to go through, they'd have hit me as I crossed).

We all make our accomodations. At the moment, the path is "safe", (i.e. the ice and frost haven't hit it yet) and although it doubles my journey time (5 mins as opposed to 10 mins, roughly) I'd sooner that than spend the morning lying in the road/down the hospital after being knocked off by Mr Audi. Once the path gets icy again, I'll be on the road and we'll see what happens.

If you're expecting him, and make a professional "fear" wobble, a biggish one, in front of him, then he'll likely give you a little more space than he otherwise would.

BM this was last year that it happened....since then JTM has been tootling to station on the path, before the bigger ride.... if it happens this year, then certainly time to report it....

Yup, but he's talking like he expects it to happen again sooner rather than later after changing back to the road come the colder weather. Best to be prepared, right?
