Have you ever thought about how they make tyres? I hadn't. I suppose I thought some giant machine just turned them out... Never occured to me that a man actually stood and stuck the bits of each one together!

It's 10 minutes long, but bear with the slightly cheesy corporate start and the voiceover artiste.

There was a good program on the other night about a bloke going to places all over the world to get parts for his bike 'The Ride of My Life'. In one part he goes to the Continental factory and you see tyres being handmade

I missed that - no digital. But I've got the book to review....

Apparently, every Schwalbe inner tube is inflated for the vulcanising process, and left inflated for 24 hours to check for leaks....

Enjoyed that Arch,I have Schwalbe tyres on both my bikes now and am really impressed with the quality, can now see why the price is a bit higher than other brands but you get what you pay for(most of the time).
Always liked those 'how is it made' type programmes.

I remember right back to Playschool and the 'through the window' bit where they often showed a factory process. The one I remember best was buttons, especially the bit where the drill came through to make the holes in them.

Just think how many workers must be in that factory, if each tyre is individually assembled, even if they can do several a minute. If only we still had a manufacturing industry....

I'll have to see if I can get iplayer to work - my laptop and mobile internet is a bit slow...

Arch if the quality is poor lots of buffering try downloading the program you'll have to wait longer but at least the playback will be smooth

We do.

One of the largest in the world, in fact.

I work in manufacturing which is why I'm interested in the processes involved, most of the bog standard stuff we used to do has been shipped out to India or China, but we still do the more advanced or technical stuff.

Thanks Arch, that was interesting - particularly the bit about folding up innertubes. I'm sure we have all tried that - squeeze a bit, fold a bit, press the valve to let out a bit more air etc, fold... even when it is the one that has just had a puncture! I'll respect my tubes and tyres more now.

Cheers Arch will look at that later on.

I always knew that manufacturing tyres was labour intensive after working in Michelin Dundee and Uniroyal Broxburn(now closed) briefly for a former employer - who repaired machinery.
