New thing to me has come with the commuting - bus traffic on A roads

How do you deal with it ?

Bus overtakes, pulls in at the next bus stop next to pavement for unknown number of passengers, you catch it up etc

I confess my tactic the last couple of days has been to slow down and let it get on its way, but then another comes along.....

if you are on a A road it is best to keep in primary if its two lanes or more. This will stop a bus doing that if the stop is not far. If you wanted to get past you would follow the same rules a car does. If you do overtake make sure you are in the drivers mirror. Something i do alot

I don't think there is a single answer
If approaching a bus stop then perhaps the primary and prevent an overtake and pull in

In other cases letting it overtake is courteous

Not much help, but do what you are comfortable with

I use the road rules of India - if a vehicle is bigger than me and it's a 50/50 or even a 60/40 situation. I let it go first unless I'm 100% it has seen and allowed me by.

Bus drivers from St. Helens are awful so I try and avoid them as much as I can  (I'm from Whiston so only down the road)

Draft it and then pull into primary when it reaches it's next stop. In my experience I've then passed the NEXT stop before it's reached me. Then, feel like a badass.

as a few have said, if you hear it coming and the bus stop isn't that far away, move to primary and keep it behind you. better than getting left hooked by it...if the bus stop is a way off, let it pass and then sit up its chuff (safely of course), and draft it while saving your legs but still doing 30+mph...it is enormous fun ^_^ just keep an eye on it's lights...it ceases to be enormous fun if you spread your face over the rear of it

From a bus driver's perspective, always hold primary if you're on a bike. I get quite a lot of cyclists ease off and move into the kerb when they hear a bus behind. This is dangerous! Buses are timed at 12-15mph in service and even mountain bikes can get ahead eventually. Don't present an opportunity for overtaking to anyone, ever!
