How long should handlebars last?

Have never broken any myself altho' have had 2 bars approaching 20 years old. One pair was stolen (with the bike - hopefully they have since snapped in disgust) and the other is on a pranged machine so I'll retire them as a precaution. I think that I would be very wary of bars with damage such as significant scratches.

BTW there is a rather clever, effortless way of opening some quill stems up using the bolt and a coin. In essence you put the bolt through the wrong way with the coin in the gap and the bolt pushes against the coin. Someone in my LBS (Cycle Heaven) showed me it.
