Hi all

I have an electric trike with 80Nm motor.

It is designed to pull a total of 250 kg.

Which I have pulled up a 12% gradient, without problem.

I have been offered an electric trailer with a 45Nm motor.

Not enough info. You need to specify the size of the wheel, gear ratio, gradient and vehicle weight.

The trike is 60kg, 26 inch rear wheel, 20inch front wheels. The motor is a Bafang M410, gear ratio I don't know.

The electric trailer, which has a 45Nm motor, weighs 50kg ,

The combined weight of cargo and me, will be around 250 kg, with a combined weight of the 2 vehicles being around 100kg.

The trike pulls up a 1/2 mile 17% gradient with 150kg, plus me, 80kg.

From a standing start half way up the hill, without any problems.

The trailer is 3500 € 6500 new.

I'm wondering if only going up steep mountain gradients in Spain, Portugal, France, italy.

The trailer will give some push, up the hill.

Otherwise, I would take a non motorised trailer.

Which if I can't get up a steep hill.

I would leave the trailer at the bottom, go to the top drop the boxes, around 100kg, half the weight, go back down and pull the trailer up.

Hope this is a little more clear.

Thanks

As it's a mid drive motor your gearing is the issue. If you cain't get up the hill then try to use a lower gear either a smaller chainring if possible or a bigger cassette?

All other considerations being equally electric motors don't really have peak torque, the figure being largely the same across the operating range

And on ICE motors peak torque is usually at a relatively inefficient point in the range for power.

So apples and pears, we you say.

Nevertheless, an actual 80NM is a nonsense, and they get away with it as unlike cars there are no industry agreements, conventions, or laws to mandate how it is.measured, so they're free to spout.whataver nonsense they like.

This lack of standard means the figures aren't even useful as a comparitor between brands.

80 Nm is a force of 80 Newtons at a distance of 1m.
1 kg mass under normal gravity "weighs" approximately 10 Newtons (more like 9.8 but 10 is generally used as the acceleration due to gravity, to make the maths easier).

So imagine a socket wrench with a 1m log bar and 8 kgs hanging off the end. Or, the same torque exerted by a force of 800 Newtons at 10cm, which is like an 80kg man standing on the end of a 10cm bar. Or 16kgs on a 50 cm bar etc etc

The last time I changed a cassette the torque setting was about 40Nm which would be fairly easy for most people to do up with a decent wrench, so double that torque: 80Nm is not some kind of insanely high figure.

So you're saying:
- fact: without trailer, 230kg, 17% hill without a problem.
- question: with trailer, 350kg all up weight, asking if hills will be a problem?

Is that correct?
