How pleased would you be to holiday alone?

I booked a week's cycling holiday some months back. I contacted the organisers a few days back and have discovered I'm the only one booked on the holiday! Ah well, just as well I like cycling alone... going to be a bit weird though!

Is it a holiday where the organisers take you on rides?

I've been on holiday before on my own in a foreign country and there's a strange sense of detachment. However, when you're with someone you know, that person is a constant reminder that you are from somewhere else.

Actually you can be a pack animal and enjoy lone cycling

I tour on my own for a week each year and it is worthwhile as I can be far more disorganised and make changes that I could not make if others were relying on me, or we had to make group decisions

I enjoy cycling with my wife and touring with her, but the disorganised chaos of a solo tour is a different experience

Love it. Admittedly the only week-long solo tour that I've done was on a motorbike rather than cycling but I love the idea of just setting off each day with a rough destination in mind, following your nose for the day then stopping where you end up. Fantastic.

But my question is.... if it's an organised holiday, why will you be on your tod? What would happen if someone else booked up? Do you negotiate routes with each other? Or is the organisation more like taking your baggage? I'm confused.

I wouldn't go to the expense of paying someone to organise a cycling holiday for me. I like the constant surprises of no knowing what each day will bring when solo touring with a tent. I only have two fixed dates for any tour: departure for the tour and departure from the tour plus knowing where the tour will start and finish. Everything else is left to happenstance.

This year for a change, i haven't got round to sorting out my return other than knowing I have to be back at least day before I leave for three days at the Edinburgh Festival.

I'll try and clarify. The organisers provide accommodation, breakfast, a few dinners and suggest an itinerary and routes. They don't lead any rides themselves, not officially anyway.

It's gite accommodation, so it'll be a pretty lonesome place a lot of the time with just me there. Better take a few books!

I was looking forward to a natter in English whilst riding (don't get much of a chance for that these days!) but am coming around to the thought of having a solo week.

I can delay a week, if I want, and share with one other but it could be frying pan into the fire! If I don't get on with that one other person, them I'm in for a very interesting week!!
