HTC Desire HD on the way

Ooooh! I'm an excited bunny! :hyper:

I'll be taking delivery of my HTC Desire HD tomorrow!!

I was coming to towards the end of my contract in December and whilst I knew it was early to try for an upgrade, I thought I'd give it a go.

So having looked up the deals online, I knew what price I wanted to aim for, so yesterday I phoned up Vodafone and asked what deals were available. Of course they were rubbish and I suggested that I could get better elsewhere. So I asked for the PAC code. The lady on the end of the phone then said, no problem, but it will cost you (I had more than 30 days left). So I kept my nerve and said, yes I'd pay the charge. She took my details and car number, and she said I'll get a letter in a couple of days with the PAC code.

Eeek! They usually pass you though to cancellations by now!

Still I held my nerve.

So today I get a phone call. The chap was phoning to give me my PAC code (not by letter then). 'Oh and can I ask why you are leaving us....?' Aha! A breakthrough!

So to cut a long story short, I got the deal I was looking for (I tried for a little more but it wasn't happening). £25 a month. 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet (aye right, 500Mb in reality).

Not bad for a flagship phone! :wahhey:

Oh and it was £7.50 cheaper than what I was on for 300 minutes!!

The moral of the story is: hold your nerve!!

Well done.
Hmmmm.....my G1 contract is due up at end of December too. Your deal is £5/month cheaper than I'm on with T-mob. And a shiny new phone. How long is the contact for? Guessing 24 months?

Sure I've read somewhere of a Desire with a slidy out keyboard. IF such a thing exists (edit:seems it does) and IF its coming to the UK I may hold out for one of those instead as I get on with it far better than the touchscreen one. All just seems to be rumours about it at the moment though

Aye, there was no way of getting it for 18 months at that price, at least not for me. I'm happy enough with that.

Yes there is the Desire Z that has the keyboard. I think the processor is slightly less powerful, but not by much.

I'll be selling my HTC Magic shortly if someone is looking for a gentle introduction to the touchscreen Android world. It's a great phone and that's why I'm sticking with HTC and Android. That's for another thread of course!

My wife has just bought the Samsung Galaxy S but it only arrived yesterday and I haven't had much chance to play with it. It's different enough to vanilla Android (my G1 is running 2.2, courtesy of cyanogenmod) to be confusing, though

The Desire Z looks attractive but that the keyboard doesn't have a dedicated number row like the G1 does/did - typing postcodes etc is going to be a pain - and it's only 800MHz which compares badly to the 1GHz of the regular Desire. Although if you want to live dangerously it's probably very amenable to overclocking. http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/for...-gen-snapdragon-processors-how-fast-are-they/

At the moment for me it's a toss up between the Galaxy S, the Desire HD, or settling for the Nexus One (at least I save myself some dosh there). Aside from Swype, though, whichever one I got I'd be stripping back to plain vanilla android as far as possible

On the subject of tariffs, when my 18 month G1 contract was up I phoned T-mobile and told them there was nothing on the market I wanted to get but that I was thinking of switching to prepay: they offereed me 100 mins/100 texts/3GB internet plus unlimited landline calls for £5/month. Given that I practically never call anyone other than work (the phone's main use is as a portable internet terminal) this works out pretty well for me

There's details about the HTC Desire Z here.

I've just had my PAC code processed so I can get an HTC Desire HD too. it also ended up with a call from the 'retention' team to try and keep me - but as my employer is getting me the phone and paying the monthly tarrif, they couldn't really compete...

I've just moved back to WM 6.5 with the HD2. Huge screen, fast processor and I can install android as a dual boot system.

I haven't taken a phone from my supplier for nearly 5 years now and currently get 300 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet (oh go on then 1gb, then I get stopped from peak hours) for £10 a month. I'd say it pays to be loyal so long as your provider doesn't give you any problems.

The Desire is a great phone - the HD will be a cracker. Mate at work has been after one for quite a while, but having handled one he's not so sure as it's quite a large beastie compared to the Desire, apparently. I told him that it would be even better as the screen's larger & the camera's been upped to 8MP.

Have fun playing - make sure you grab yourself the free full version of the Angry Birds game straight away....

Does anyone actually do that? The 'charge it up completely before first' use thing?

Or just dive straight in like a five year old on Christmas Day like I do and then stick it on charge once the initial excitement is over.

Having fun then? Things have moved on a touch since the Magic....

Not half! I really like my magic, it's a great wee phone, but this is a huge step up from it! Internet browsing is so much better!

Goo, I downloaded Angry Birds! I will not be playing it though.....I won't....honest!

After I've used it a bit I'll put my thoughts on the phone here.

I have an HTC Desire. Is good!

HOWEVER ...

My contract ran out and I just got myself a ... duh duh duh duuuuhhh! Nokia N8!

Wait ... what? Why the quizzical, sneering faces?

Yes it got terrible reviews, yes it's no where near as smooth, functional and well behaved as the Desire.

But I like it anyway  It has a certain ... charm.
