Htc phone help if i may

My HTC Desire s is stuck in headphone mode...so I can't hear any sound, no music, no phone rings etc..I have never once plugged headphones into this thing and suddenly today the headphone icon appeared on the top of the screen and I can't get rid of it.
Does anybody know how to re set it so I can hear the phone ring?
I have taken the battery out and re booted the phone.but.no.joy.

Tried putting some headphones in then removing them? I am just making stuff up here, but I would try that!

oh dear me , got to be worth plugging some in . must admit anything odd happens with the old Nokia brick always turn them off and hey presto all good when turned back on

Cheers all...i will borrow some headphones and try that..i did see an app on googleplay claiming to fix the bug but it didnt work.
The phone works on speaker only i found out just now...annoying. Thanks for helping.

Software reboot else strong light ti look inside socket. You can try to carefully clean it, nothing metal! You can buy small air canisters that blasts crap out.
