Hub / freewheel

Firstly 2 apologies:

I am trying to improve my cycle maintenance skills and knowledge by converting an old MTB H/T to single speed.

Can some tell me if the housing for the freewheel (?) is an integral part of the hub? If not, how do you separate?

What you've done Andy is stripped the freewheel, not removed it. The body is still on the wheel (obviously)
I assume you undid the lockring with two holes to remove the sprockets/balls/pawls. That'd be normal if you wanted to service the freewheel, but to remove the thing as a whole, you'd use a splined freewheel remover. You can see the splines it sits in (you can pass the remover over the axle)...normally i'd remove the wheel, clamp the removing tool in a vice (facing upwards), sit the wheel on the tool and use the rim as leverage to screw off the freewheel. Freewheels screw on and off of course.

Right now, i cant remember which way you screw them to get them off...

Once the body's off (or still on the wheel if you prefer), you can re-assemble the freewheel if you want it for future use.

Ay, inside of freewheel. Splined tool to remove - turn anti clockwise. Expect to need a lot of force to remove it.

Aye - you need something like this (google cassette tool)

There are different sizes (no surprise there) so check before buying.

Thanks for the advice. Got hold of a freewheel tool from by LBS and it worked a treat. I have to admit I was expecting a bit of a battle to get the freewheel off it came off with not much of a fight,bit of pressure and sharp metallic sounding crack and that was that.
