I do a similar route but from Beverley, about 80+ miles in total round trip, the worst part is from Goole down to the crossing at Keadby Bridge over the Trent just before Gunness. The scenery is so dull and if it is a head wind then it is even worse with no shelter, the land is so flat. The first time I did it, I thought I would have the Trent to look at as I rode, but if I recall the only time you see it is when you cross it, unless you stop for a peep, most of the time it is out of sight behind the embankment. The views from the South bank are good though across the Humber.

I prefer to go down to Thorne from Goole and then cut across to Keadby Bridge, at least there's a few bumps to ride up and down to break up the flat terrain

Hi zacklaws

Your route option has been noted - thanks. It's just that I've never been along that road from Goole down through Adlingfleet & Amcotts to Gunness and I can take a look at the Nature Reserve near Ousefleet on passing.

I understand, a bit of trivia really, there's an OS grid square at Ousefleet which apparently is the only grid square on OS maps, in the UK, which is all but empty! Yes, it's not an area that will add to your hills cv.

Hi zacklaws

I'm back today from this circular route and yes the headwind that hits you as you turn south from Ousefleet all the way through to Gunness. There's nothing to stop it, made worse by a dearth of hedging for most of the way. I was well nithered by the time I hit Scunthorpe.

Before I went I checked out on google street that I could cycle from Winterton through to Horkstow via Horkstow Bridge over the River Ancholme - there is just half mile of hard track from the end of the minor road from Winterton. Good views from the Horkstow to Barton Road minor road.

The east footpath over the Humber Bridge was closed and this was the start of a nightmare journey from Hull attempting to follow the Sustrans route to Beverley, no time to go to "Nellie's". If anyone can find a cycle route sign in Kirk Ella showing the road to Cottingham will they please "post" it. I rarely ask for directions but I asked a policewoman in Hessle and some nurses in Kirk Ella (nothing against uniforms!). I couldn't cycle under the bridge to the east as there were road repairs (?) in progress. I wonder if Hull has too many cycle routes because there were stickers all over the place, Routes 1, 65, 66, TPT, east, west etc., but many were missing where I felt they were most needed, I have done Hull before so I do have some experience of the place. I never did end up with the Sustrans route, instead I found myself out at Skidby Mill just before being directed onto the A 164 = I couldn't believe it. I ended up crossing the A164 at that point and came into Beverley from the Walkington direction.

I was relieved to make it to Cherry Burton and pick up the Hudson Way. By way of contrast, Pocklington's cycle signs were perfect.

ps my rear gear cable snapped 10 miles short of home but by I had passed the "bumpy" bits.
