£230 for nine months riding and you're complaining about that? You should see my bill, it's waaaay worse than that.

p.s. no telling me about stingy scotsmen. You lot haven't got a hope against the thrifty Dutch.

£230 for a nine-month old bike sounds pretty fierce to me, even if it has lived a bit. I thought you went on a maintenance course Dr M? Time to dust off those manuals methinks.

It's time Bollo. I'm short of time. I could probably make the time, but then I'd have less time with the kids, and I don't see enough of them a the moment as it is. Then you finally get the kids to bed and the last thing you feel like is fettling with the bike. Oh and it's always good to talk to Mrs Magnatom, occasionally!

Tonight is a good example. I get in, and straight away there is a crisis. Middle kid (boy) doesn't want to eat his peas and thus won't touch his dinner. I end up spending an hour (probably more) 'encouraging' him to eat some. In the end we manage 4 peas. During this, Mrs Magnatom has taken kid no, 1 and 3 up for bath. By the time kid no 2 is upstairs 1 and 3 have finished the bath and Mrs Magnatom is taking kid 3 to bed (our wee girl). I sort out boys, have stories and off to bed they go. I am now downstairs having a bit of chocolate and some wine, feeling pooped, hoping I will see Mrs Magnatom at some point (i.e. kid 1 will go to sleep). Ah the joys.

In saying that, I will pop in the garage at some point tonight to have a quick look at the Ribble. Back to the LBS tomorrow for me.

Tune in next week for another day in the life of the Magnatom family, as the kids discover the joys of dropping their toys into the fish tank to watch the fish dive for cover........:biggrin:

Priorities and time management? Taking an hour to persuade an ankle biter to eat four peas? Blimey!

You'll find out when your wee nipper gets older, sometimes you just have to stand your ground. No 2 has never eaten veg, well, not that he has known about. So this is the drive to get him eating veg. Hard at the time, but worth it in the long run, hopefully.

For number 1 the hard job was sleep. When we moved him into a bed, he wouldn't stay in it. One night I had to put him back to bed 60 times. That was hard. In the long run it was worth it though. Fun, fun, fun!

I know where you are Mags...... been there - try to build a quick 5 min check/wipe down into the return bike to shed/garage - I do...that makes life easy. Get in (park bike in hall), shower, change, take bike to garage and wash and sort it, come in 5 mins later... built in to routine. If I leave the bike where it is, the downstairs loo is out of action......... bike in way..........

It's a bit easier for me now, mine are 7 and 9....but when younger..yes I know..............

TBH £230 with labour is fine - I've spent that in 12 months on a fixed and do my own labour............... that's just one bike, the other three.........................

The problem is time is tight when I get in. Everyone else has started dinner, I need to get in washed changed and downstairs as fast as I can to see the kids at dinner!

Och, it's only for a wee while. Soon they'll all be gettig places for themselves.....kids can move out of home at 8 can't they? ;)

They eat without me............

TBH, my kids have been great with veg - have you done the stupid games.... broccoli is great... 'oh I'm eating a tree........' carrots cut them long and thin or use a wave cutter.......... (cooked or raw) got to be exciting when young......TBH we've been dead lucky with our two, happy to eat most veg and good. Some of their mates are awkward............. had three kids from same family round last night, the two younger ones were going on how the older one only ate peas........ but all loved roast chicken - which we'd cooked........

Bad luck on the cost ... I've had times when I've picked my bike up from the bike shop and thought ouch!!!

On the veg front ... sneak the veg in where ever you can ... then at least they are getting some veg, and they may start to accept the flavour. What about having a very small bowl of soup - and telling them its a dip and giving them various things to dip in it. One of mine was brilliant at veg ... so I assumed that was all down to me, the next one was a right pain - so I blamed her. She is now 13 and whilst not veg mad eats quite a reasonable range which is still expanding.

There's your problem right there. Conscientious parenting is the enemy of cycling.

So it turns out that although my front chainrings didn't look to bad, that they were the cause of the chainsuck. Pooh. New front chainrings as well.

I've pretty much got me a new bike!

No beer for the next few months then!
