hehe i was refering to the uproar surrounding spartacus when people thought he had a hidden motor in his bike , the UCI were even considering x raying bikes just in case .

No offense to the OP , your getting lot more training in than i am lately as i have not had chance for a non commute ride for nearly a month and as usual the family plans something on a sunday morning when they know its my only me time.:gun:

I fully appreciate that mine is a luxurious ponderance

With a nine month old daughter and a wife who works weekends (we can't afford childcare) it's almost impossible to find time for long rides...

...although the ride to works seems to be getting longer.

That's the way to do, sneak them in under the radar (along with bike upgrades, though upgrading the frame unnoticed is slightly tricky).

IMO there's a good balance you need to find between speed and reaction time. If you are too slow, you are less assertive and folk are more likely to pull out but too fast you've less time to react!

I don't really get that (touch wood) I must look like a lump on a bike.

Hells teeth, I meant 24mph on a clear dry windless day on the flat, for maybe fifteen minutes at a time. Average is much lower

Yeah, you really made it clear in the opening post didn't you.

Why not just change "clear dry windless day" to "in a vacuum".

You on STRAVA, as I reckon you'd be challenging some of those pro riders.

Haven't read every response to this, so apologies if I'm reiterating anyone or stating the obvious. For me, it's the same for driving; all about 'appropriate speed'. Basically if it's clear, go fast. If it's not, cycle at a speed that will allow for any potential hazards associated with the situation.

If you're saying that all's clear but you feel as though you should dock your speed for safety reasons, I guess it's a case of sticking to your comfort zones. As a few peeps here have said, ensuring the bike's well maintained will improve confidence at speed.

Personally I see no problem with hitting the hammer when it's safe to do so, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :-)
