I really want to get a job which I will be able to commute to. I love the concept of being able to travel somewhere for free and then earn money! The early mornings might be a problem but I would get used to that (I used to get up at 5.30 every morning!).

You are at college ? Commute there - ride 5 miles in the wrong direction, then 5 back. Same on way home. This assumes college is near. Oh and you will need a commute bike.

It's not quite free. One of my local cycling groups estimates that cycling costs 4p a mile, while driving costs 79p a mile (although I have no idea what kind of car they were basing this on).

If I get the bus to work it's 45-50p a mile so while cycling is not free, it's the cheapest there is.

Surely walking is the cheapest form of transport.

It might do after a few years, but I'm currently on 31p per mile and coming down all the time.

But then, I bought two of everything - clothing, lights and even bikes.

Cycling is free in that you don't have to pay for fuel, VED, etc but you spend twice as much on lube, clothing, lights, racks, panniers, tyres, tubes... you get the point.

if you factor in extra food then it costs a bit more.

But if you factor in no gym fees, then its minus something per mile!!!

So you getting up when i am cycling home from work this week : )

On day shift i get up at 5.20, out for 6 am and if we get hit with overtime it can be up to 7 pm before i get home and i still cycle commute so it is do-able.

Then you add in N+1, then you think, hmm might be nice to off road commute, so the MTB is made ready, then it gets winterised with spikes, more lights, spare set of kit, oh and you just can't have one set of wheels for the best bike...

Well college is 20 miles away so it might be a bit difficult arriving there, bathed in sweat, fully clothed in lycra. My college chums wouldnt let me live it down.
