Here's the background:
I have an XP desktop. It uses Outlook Express and all my emails are in that format. I have transfered emails, address books etc between one machine and another in the past. I have always had MS Office 97 for Excel and Word (stop sniggering at the back!)
Here's my problem:
I recently bought MS Office Home and Business 2010 (foolish, I know), uninstalled MS Office 97, and installed the new MS Office 2010 on my XP machine. Outlook Express and my emails disappeared instantly. They came back when I uninstalled MS Office 2010.

I know how to convert Outlook Express files to Outlook files but I would rather stick with Outlook Express and MS Office 2010 at the same time. Can it be done?

BTW, spare me the lectures about how XP and Outlook Express are so last week.

Thank you.

Yes you can. How, I have no idea. That's up to smarter men than I.

Thank you.

Choose custom install, you then get the chance to decide what you want to install from MS Office.

Thank you for your help. I uninstalled MS Office 97. For some reason this had the effect of converting the Outlook Express shortcut on my desktop into a control panel for Internet Explorer, but Outlook Express could still be accessed via My Programs. As suggested, I custom installed Office 2010 without Outlook, and it all seems to function OK. I'm very grateful for your help. Happy Christmas.

Be my guest.

I used OE for years. Got Outlook 2007 and never looked back! You can just use for emails if you wish and then there's not muich difference. Once you allow yourself to use the calendar or tasks etc, you realise how useful it becomes. Have upgraded 20 Outlook 2010 now and it looks even better.

As for XP, I agree with you, I prefer it to W7 and W8 but the trouble is now getting drivers for older machines is proving difficult.

Why buy M$ office when you can get Libre office free? Libre office also handles all the file formats that the older versions of office will not touch (xlsx).
Also let MS or Google store your email, OK they read it all, but is worth the security of your data.

No it isn't. I Googled "One Shot drain cleaner" earlier today. Adverts for it appeared on most of the websites I subsequently visited. I have no desire to assist Google in its sinister quest for a global information monopoly. BTW, why are they buying into military robots?

Google might store your email but it also uses the content to profile your interests and activities.

Libre Office can mis-handle the formatting of recent versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents. There's not a lot of fun to be had from having to unpick mangled Microsoft generated documents opened in Libre Office.

Having said that I routinely use Libre Office at home and work and generate PDF files of word processed documents that do not need to be edited.
