Icy clips

With SPD pedals, because they are metal can they get icy in cold weather? I can recall slipping on them a few times when it has been wet but was wondering what the cold weather did to them?

I think they are as likely to ice up as any other part of a bike. I have never experienced frozen pedals but clearly that is anecdotal and can not be treated as evidence.

I can't recall if they get iced or not I don't think its really an issue, but once you are clipped in they are much more reliable than flats in slippy conditions IMO.

I would add a caveat to this. Unless the bike slides from under you! Then flats are your friend

My spd's have never iced up or been troubled by ice.

No, but they can be a bit of a PITA if you walk in snow beforehand - the snow gets compacted around the cleat and takes a fair few clip-in attempts/much foot-stamping before you're in securely.

Or you brake at an inopportune time My one and only bad off because of ice on my first day of riding in SPD's.

Like Henshaw said, you can get snow compacted into them. And as long as the bike is kept inside overnight (or stored somewhere with above-zero temperatures) you should be fine.

Personally, I don't use SPD pedals in winter, as you're more likely to need to put a foot down quickly. But, here we are guaranteed 3-4 months snow and ice.

If a bike is good enough to warrant putting clipless pedals on it, I would expect it never to be kept outside!

If it's cold enough to freeze no water will get thrown onto your SPDs and they won't freeze.

As others have written though, they are a pain off road in snow; your cleats get clogged with snow, which hardens to ice and eventually you can't clip in. Definitely swap to flatties for snow riding.
