If you had to pick between 2014 Synapse 105 or Defy 1....?

Im really not sure.

The synapse are awesome bikes, but what a rubbish wheelset the 2014 105 bike comes with in the shimano rs10`s, which of the two bikes would be of most interest to you ? I am of course going to try both out but I cant believe cannondale kitted out their bike with such mediocre wheels.

The RS10 wheelset is fine and is a wheelset Cannondale have been using on and off as wheels for years, the wheels that come on OTP bikes is pretty much always as sh*t as it comes.

The Synapse and the Defy night not be comparable bikes in the 1st place, the Synapse is a "sportive" bike, i.e. a sit up and beg, wearing a race bike costume! Not sure of the Defy geometry.

The defy is very much endurance / sportive as well and the 2014 model looks terrific. Ive had rs10`s before and imo they are garbage, broke 2 spokes on my set on their first run out. If I go for the synapse id have to ditch the wheels from the off or try to persuade the dealer to swap them out.

Lots of manufacturers do that so they can keep the price of the bike down. My Bianchi carbon a pretty good frame came with campags lowest entry wheels; I thought it'd happen sooner but 6years later I've only just got round to changing them when the OME hubs started to play up and the new wheels (now Fulcrum Quattros) make it seem like a new bike again  I'd go for the bike that feels best and has good componetary a perhaps consider an upgrade to the wheels down the line, don't worry about it them just now.

Buy the Cannondale, buy the wheels you want. Sell rs10 on ebay. Ride bike.
Yes but the Synapse 105 has disc brakes so will that not limit the choice of wheel replacement? ie he might need to pay more for a wheel which has a hub to take disc brakes compared with the rim brakes on the defy which would mean a wider choice and therefore a cheaper upgrade path. Just wondering, I quite like the new synapse but the quality of disc brake and wheel set is off putting, I don't want to spend over £1k and then have to spend another 4 or 500 just to get the ride I'd like. Mind you that Synapse alloy frame is nice

I looked at a Defy 1 in a LBS and have to agree the blue is awful.

Buy the bike that fits you best and the colour scheme you like. Wheels can and will be upgraded.
I love my Defy 1 , and the stock wheels have got me fitter and lighter. Time for an upgrade

I'd get the 2013 bike in white then, it's the same...except it'll be cheaper and you can use the extra for an upgrade or whatever

Ashcycles have good deals on Giants - £180 off the 2013 defy 1 http://www.ashcycles.com/site/giant-defy-1-2013-white

That said I like the blue
