Re the 'middle-lane-Malcomes" and 4X4's
For the last 20 years I've been a large 4X4 driver. There is a reason why we are viewed as sitting in the middle lane by modern standards, and this is to do with acceleration and top speed
I have a Landrover Defender, comfortable crusing speed is about 65-70mph.
Top whack unloaded I can probably hit 85 for a while and even 95 downhill with a following wind.
However even the slightest slope and I'm down the the 60's or even 50's and my nought to 60 would be the wrong side of 30 seconds.
Effectivly this means we are faster then the HGV's, but only just.
I can't 'blast' past an HGV or a slow car, therefore I'm planning not just the move ahead, but probaly three moves ahead.
You think I'm sitting in the middle lane, but if you followed me for 5 miles at my speed you would realise we spend most of our time in the slow lane, and take maybe 1-2 mins to pass a line of 2-3 lorries
As an aside:
I have recently just followed three colleagues 1,300 miles UK to Switzerland and back, both in large slow 17 seater mini buses. Front bus had the satnav, so I was always behind. It took them a couple of hours to work out that I was always one or two steps ahead of them, even though I was the rear vehicle with regard to lane changing, I'm used to thinking ahead, as car drivers they are not
