I'm just fed up this afternoon, I don't seem able to get a job, everywhere we turn in this house there is another job requiring more money be spent.

just taken up a floor in the extension out the back (was moving a bit too much and was correct in assuming it to be rotten from having had a leaky roof) and now I suspect it's foundations consist of a skim of concrete and not much else, the same skim covers the entire garden, no idea why you would build like that, and not sure of the options regarding it and possibly going to have to spend lots of money in order to sort it.

wife is overly stressed at work in a job she started a couple of months ago and is looking for other jobs.

life is only going 'ok' at the moment.

right, i'm off out for a wander into town.

Go for a ride. You'll feel better for it.

unfortunately my bike is bottom of a stack of four bikes, including my mountain bike which is currently out of action, hemmed in behind a load of other stuff.

I was off work for a while between jobs. Between job hunting I was really busy doing all sorts of jobs at home. If you go by the old saying that a pound saved is a pound earned you can still earn a days pay on jobs in your own house.
I do see there is a dilemma that when out of work you dont want to be or are not able to throw money at jobs in the house, but many (like your floor) are surprisingly cheap for the materials compared to the cost of a man coming in.

(sorry if I sound like Norman Tebbitt)

Will you both have time to get out into the countryside and have a good walk + a picnic together so you can have a stress-free chat as you walk... it helps to set priorities for things that need doing and things that you can live with... without having them around you. Then, things that can wait don't get to you as much and you can concerntrate on one or two jobs first.

[I remember how much it helped when we first got married and had to budget for everything to make ends meet, not having to pay rates in February and March meant we could use the money 'saved' to pay the house insurance!

Keep in touch BS... helps to talk!

Keep calm & carry on...something will turn up & you sound like a go-ahead sort of chap.

My entire career is founded on a broken toilet.

I'd just finished academic training (law & languages degree, legal practice course) and had no job to go to. Newly married with my wife earning not much, on a short term contract, I needed work. One day for something to do, I set about fixing the outside loo in our garden. I ended up taking the damn thing out completely, because it was terminally broken.

Seeing me carting this old china crapper round the garden, a neighbour looked over the fence & asked me very directly why I didn't appear to have a job. I explained. He introduced me to his solicitor who gave me a job. That was 17 years ago.

You never know what will come along, when, or why. Thank goodness for toilets, is what I say.

Can't you claim building repairs on your home insurance?

My worry is that there are no foundations under the end wall of the extension, however, when explaining what I'd been up to work wise on the house (I'm very good at thinking while talking, it's helped find a solution acceptable to both parties in issues when working in specialist retail) I pointed out that the building has stood for 10 years or so since the previous owners claim it was built before they bought the house. I have also figured out how to fit the floor myself using one of two options.

Didn't go for a walk as didn't want to spend money in town and couldn't find my hiking boots to go up the hill.

Arch: I normally go with 'ok' as my minimum as I'm aware there are people worse off, it also means I'm not about to do something stupid
