As some of you are aware I'm getting married (3 weeks today )

As children of the 80s we have chosen "It must be love" by Madness as our 1st dance.

However someone pointed out a few nights ago, it's not by Madness, but by Labi Siffre in 1972.

In fact I think Labi's original is much better - but it doesn't have any sentimental value for us (or anyone else there, I guess).

So which is better :-

Labi - probably better and more danceable -

Madness - everyone will know -

Which would you choose?

Any thoughts much appreciated

Thanks.

Surely, if it's for your wedding, and you both place sentimental value on the Madness version it should be that one? Even if it isn't as good quality, it should be fun, and connected to you IMHO anyway.

Thanks - that's what I thought, although I prefer the original.

Anyway it's all just an excuse for a party, so doesn't seem that important - although organising your own wedding is a nightmare.

Tiny, insignificant things take on massive significance and you're paranoid everyone will have a good time!

Wedding magazines should be banned IMHO - the amount of expensive tat surrounding weddings is astounding.

Luckily we're a bit older than average and the florist / decorator/photographer have been surprised by how we want things done nicely but appropriately.

We are getting married in a rather Industrial space, with exposed pipes etc - most people spend a fortune on fabric covering these, apparantly. The decorator said it was a pleasure to meet my bride to be (She is a trained architect) who wanted to highlight the venue - which is the view over the Downs and uplight the expose beams, which we like.

Sorry about the random rant, but I have found "The Wedding Industry" to be one of the most cynical marketers I've come across. Both of us being in our 40s have made us pay for the wedding and given us the confidence to say no. Chocolate fountains / inflatable video booths etc etc seem de rigeur these days for a wedding.

We just a want a good party with a nice venue, good food, copious drinks and friends/family. (And the trivial 1st dance song!)

I know! This has bugged me for a while now. Anything with the word wedding in front of it becomes extremely expensive, even when no different for the same thing not meant for a wedding!

The venue and the way in which you have planned it sound amazing to me! And as for maybe upsetting people and getting it right for the guests...it's YOUR day. They are there to share it and enjoy it with you, not do things that only they would like. So just you & your wife to be enjoy it! Good luck!

Oooh, that sounds cool!

I quite agree about the overpriced, over pressured wedding palaver. NT and I have talked a bit about what we want from our wedding, and have decided two things. First, we want relaxed and informal above all, with everyone comfortable. If this means me in trousers, but my Mum dressed up to the nines*, that's fine. Secondly, I want a three tiered cake of cheese, possibly with a topper of pork pie.

I can't understand spending tens of thousands on a single day. It's the rest of the days afterwards that matter, and should have the effort put into.

I hope your day goes swimmingly! And I say goes with the version of the song that means most to you.

*for my Mum, this will be an immaculate outfit, hand adapted from an incredible charity shop find, probably finished the night before....

I agree, go with the Madness version as it is the one you both feel connected to.

Ummmm, we're not having a first song (and dance) I take it?

I still want a conventional fruit cake, not too much icing if at all.
We'll have a bit of background music (probably from my phone ^_^) and Maxwell Watts providing part of the musical entertainment, as well as being my best man.

I don't think anybody's suggested playing both versions yet. Madness first because that's the version you know together but, as the Labi Siffre one feels so very different, you could maybe play it - and dance to it - later on. If not ''first and last'' then before cake-fuelled kids start running rings round everybody! Variations on a theme and all that....

Have a great day (and many great days afterwards) anyway, Mangaman.

Fruit cake too is good. After all, one of my tiers will be a Wensleydale, which goes very well with fruit cake.

I don't feel the need for a first dance, no. Perhaps we could play something suitable while we do a demo of stripping down your tractor or something?

Manga, it'll have to be Madness but I always had a soft spot for Labi. This one of his is a guilty, schmaltzy favourite of mine...

... is the bride in blue?
