Inherited eMac

I've recently got an eMac from a friend & sometimes when I'm using it the screen goes a pinky colour. I'm a bit worried about putting too much on it in case the screen just goes kaput. Should I be worried?

There's also lots of graphic stuff on there, no instructions etc. All still in her name & I've not got the licences. Is it likely I could work out how to use all this stuff from very little knowledge or should I just get rid of the lot to make machine faster?

In which case, how would I uninstall? Or, how could I revert to factory settings?

I've got my iBook G4 which I use all the time but was thinking of letting husband have the eMac.

If anyone can help, please use simple language, for although I have used a Mac for 7 years, I'm not really hyper technical. As I used them at work there was always someone there to fix when problems arose.

Sounds like a problem with the screen rather than anything else. Unless there are any other problems, it should not affect your data on the disk. Not sure how easy it will be to replace/fix if the screen goes, but you can always yank the disk out if you need to rescue your data.

I had this thought that if the screen went you couldn't access any information! I might just transfer all my pictures onto it & not bother to use it online.

I thought a Mac Mini was going to be my next move but the screens are really expensive. You can use 'any' but they have to have a certain connection (technical term in Curry's, white, waffly thing) I think it is a DVi connection.

Nonsense. The connector on the back is DVI, but DVI-to-VGA connectors are dead cheap - I think the Mac Mini even comes with one! So any monitor would indeed be fine. Curry's once again live up to their reputation.

to uninstall the software, drag it to the bin and empty it. simples. it's not like the days of os9 when software used to copy bits and pieces all over the system. carwash will now be along to tell you there are exceptions like virus software ;), but if it's adobe software and the like, the advice stands.

yes, they have to be a special connection, unless you pay £5 for a converter!

my i mac has a built in screen but has a mini dvi on the back, a converter from mac allows a standard monitor to connect into it (on the i mac giving me two screens sat side by side) giving the mac mini a normal screen.

if you want you could plug a projector in!

Actually, the least said about Adobe installers the better! But that was just a poor choice of example - you are indeed correct that in most cases, Mac applications are installed by dragging them to Applications folder, and uninstalled by dragging them to the trash. This simple process often confuses switchers from other systems that make things unnecessarily complicated.

(Some apps do require installers though; the general rule is that if there's an installer, it's because the app needs to put other files elsewhere for Important But Complicated Reasons.)
