Had my bike stolen recently and thought i would be covered with my House contents insurance, but when i phoned to make a claim i was told that basic household insurance does not cover pedal cycles stolen from your House, garage, outbuilding or shed. Apparently you need personnel belongings insurance which is extra cover for any pedal cycle stolen from your property or stolen when your out and about. So don't get caught out like me and check your fully covered.

Who is the insurer? (So we can avoid giving them any custom)

To be fair, this is standard procedure on many household policies. You normally have to request cycle cover when taking it out.

My house insurance covers up to £500. They wanted a ridiculous sized premium for anything over that. When I asked why, they said £500 should cover the cost of almost any bike?!? The woman had the attitude that paying anymore for a bike was silly. Stupid to think that other item like camera equipment is up to a value of several thousand. She wasn't too amused when I said if my bike got nicked I'd just tell the insurance company that it was my camera!

Mine is covered by default, but if you read the clauses, the bike(s) must be secured to an immoveable object...rather than just kicking round in the locked shed.
I fitted a hoop with security screws to my shed walls...sorted.

Yes thats what I had to do. I listed them and I think it cost me an extra £1.70 per month

When my bike was stolen Sainsbury's were very good about it. It was covered on the house insurance (it wasn't stolen at home). By the time I next wanted to use the bike the new one had arrived (the wednesday after when I was going out with the club again).

It covered up to around £600-700.

I wouldn't blame any insurance company for not covering it; it is your job to check you have adequte insurance - not just assume you do.

Norwich Union offer bike cover in there basic contents policy there is also the option of up to £1500 cover for my bicycle, with no stipulations on how it was to be locked up, and, the cover also included whilst the bike was actually in use, e.g. if someone knocks me off the bike and makes off with it. The extra premium was about £35 on top of the contents.

Glad to hear this. I've recently gone with Sainsbury's for home & contents insurance, partly because of their clear policy on bikes. Up to £500 inclusive cover per bike (anywhere, provided it's locked if left) and, with a receipt or valuation, higher value bikes are covered up to £1500. Very competitive premiums too.
