Most of it already exists, it's mainly the comms aspect that is new - allowing riders to share data with each other during the ride rather than having to wait until afterwards.

If you can afford it, a dedicated GPS unit will always be better than a phone GPS. If you want the fitness data, then Garmin has a couple of GPS units that do cadence, heart-rate, etc, as well as navigation. Edge 305 and 705, from memory. If you just want navigation plus typical bike computer data (average speed, etc), then the eTrex Vista HCx is the one I have and would heartily recommend.

If you want to just do it on the iPhone, there are a number of apps around - I'm sure iPhone users can provide recommendations. Bear in mind constant GPS use kills the battery, though.

I use Motion X GPS as a free App on my iPhone. It's very good but the battery only lasts 2.5 - 3.5 hours. I'm buying a Garmin 705, if that answers the question for you?
