Hello all,

This seems like a nice forum so I thought I'd introduce myself. Me and my girlfriend have been bitten by the cycling bug again after not riding at all for about 5 years. The bikes that we have seem perfectly usable still, so at least we're not starting from scratch. Took the bike out yesterday to re-acquaint myself with it, and again today. Now, my bum is telling me it's had enough so I'll leave it for a few days!

I popped into my LBS today to have a look round and say hello. She's getting hers serviced there. They suggested we get proper cycling shorts so that's the first thing to buy. I'm convinced my saddle could be comfier too, so that will probably get changed as well sometime.

Just out of interest, has anyone heard of the make of my bike, "Gitane"? I bought it from a different LBS many (10 ish) years ago, and I've always been pleased with it. It's a rigid aluminium framed MTB with a Deore LX groupset (apart from the shifters which are Gripshift). I think the make of bike might be a Peugeot spin-off but not sure.

We'll be using the bikes for easy trail-riding and possibly quiet road riding too. If I get on with it OK I'll use it to commute a short distance from home to the local railway station. Just not sure how I'll handle the cold mornings, and wet weather.

Go and buy some proper padded shorts, you won't regret it and your GF will enjoy the sight. Don't wear anything under them. Next buy some proper cycling gloves with padded palms, then some..... then... then...

Good prices are on Wiggle (look for DHB shorts, cheapish and comfy) and Chain Reaction Cycles as well as Merlin Cycles in Leyland.

Thanks for the welcome folks! I'll certainly follow up on the tips, especially the one about wiggle. I love the feeling of lycra in the morning....

Gitane are a French manufacturer and have been about donkey's years. Fairly low volume sales over here though.
