Yes, money is only a promise and people can break promises. But how much food would you hoard? How long would you be expecting it to last? Investing in some skills that might last longer than any food store might be a better way to go. That and making sure you had the biggest stick...
I think in the event of it all going pear shaped, the deciding factor between doing OK or not will be the people you know and how well you can co-operate together. I think that goes for big disasters or something like the situation in Cyprus. For example, if you always shopped at a hypermarket I can't imagine them being interested in anything other than your hard cash, if you had a relationship with your local farm shop I'd expect them to give you a bit of credit till the money started flowing again.

Yes, all true. I'm not thinking of stockpiling enough food for years, but unless you have an allotment up and running, and are set up for hunting, there's going to be a lag while you learn to be self sufficient. One can invest in both tins and skills.

The other big factors of course are adaptability and how much of a contrast the new situation is to the old. The meek may not inherit the Earth, but I can imagine someone who has never had to iron their own shirt may not do as well as someone used to making a Giro last a fortnight.

Depends what they spend the Giro on. These days, being short of money doesn't seem to equate to knowing how to cook or anything like that. When the ready meals run out....

But I take your point. For the record, I can't remember the last time I ironed one of my own shirts, but then I can't remember the last time any of them got ironed at all... ;)

Considering I spent best part of £90 in tesco yesterday, I reckon we'd make it to Monday!
If I lock the cupboards and fridge and perhaps chain the children to their beds, possibly Wednesday.
We were flooded in 2005 and the power was off for quite a while throughout the city -and a sizeable chunk of the region - so no atm's and not many shops either. I raided the tennis club subs for cash and we cooked on a camp stove in one of the bedrooms for a couple of weeks.
