Currently using the Runtastic bike app on my rides. I notice that this really eats the battery, doubt it would last little more than 2 hours.

Does anyone else find this with the iPhone?

Is a dedicated bike computer a better option? Or a Garmin?

Try Cyclemeter. Works great for me and the battery life is good with it running, especially if you switch off the option to update to the internet every five minutes.

iPhone with GPS running: ~5 hours battery

Garmin Edge 500 Cycle GPS: 18 hours battery (£199)

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Trail GPS: 25 hours battery (£209)

Cycle Computer: ~6 months battery (£20 to £50)

Obviously with the cycle computer you don't get a mapping or location function - If you don't need this, then a cycle computer is the way to go.
