I remembering reading this in the paper many years ago: a previously successful accountant was in court facing bankruptcy charges. The judge was admonishing him and said that he couldn't really have been much of an accountant if he couldn't have foreseen the mess he (the accountant) was about to land in.
The accountant coolly and phlegmatically simply said, 'Does that mean a doctor's going to live forever.'
"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Nearly the last words of American Civil War General John Sedgwick.[6]
In response to Mrs. Connally's comment, "Mr. President, you can't say that Dallas doesn't love you." John F. Kennedy uttered his last words, "That's very obvious."[7]
