I think nutrition is a big thing

top rides that we see nowadays have perfectly designed diets set out by experts who have studied the subject for years

In the old days you ate what you mother gave you - which was what she could afford
and probably worked in the factory full time as well

and probably lived in a cardboard box in the middle of the Motorway
If they were lucky!

A cardboard box tha' says, eee look at this bloody show off!

I think modern riders are coming through younger as there are now proper training plans, knowledge about nutrition & rest that work, for riders to work on from a younger age, so they're at the same stage of development at 17/18 that previous generations were at aged 25+

As long as I breathe, I attack.
typical races were a slog fest of endurance compared to today , i suppose its a reaction to the tv generation needing more instant gratification leading to shorter more intense races .Gone are the days of 2 stages a day on GT so the orgainser could get double fees from hosting towns
