... shifters or derailleurs? Basically I don't really like the 'feel' of how my SRAM Rival equipped bike shifts but might need to use the levers on another project - mating them with a Shimano front mech. As I understand it, I have to match SRAM rear mech and SRAM shifters, because it work won't correctly with a 105 rear mech (without travel mate)?

Anyway, in regard to the feel of the front shifting - is it the shfters that make it feel how it does, or the derailleur? Will the shifting feel smoother, with my 105 front mech and Rival levers? My sources tell me that I can use a Shimano front mech with SRAM shifters and it's just the rear that won't work properly?

I dont know about shimano and sram compatablity, but I know the clicks come from the shifters.

The indexing logic is built into the shifters in all modern systems. A few firms have tried the reverse, most notably Shimano with the Positron system, but all quickly sank into obscurity.

SRAM shifters do work with Shimano mechs EXCEPT for models beginning with an X or SX prefix. So SRAM Rocket levers will index nicely with a Shimano mech, but SRAM X7 levers won't.

I suppose I could take the levers off the surplus bike and give it a try. I would rather keep it intact though, with a view to selling it, as a complete bike. Shame that second hand Shimano levers are so costly!
