Orbea onix 105 group set from LBS, owner says it wa £1700but it has hung around so now will take £1000. Only thing putting me off is that I am currently using Sora and thought if I upgraded would go the whole hog to Ultegra. The LBS says the wheels on the the bike are Mavic Aksum, he says they are good are they? The brakes are Orbeas own not 105s and the chainset is Tiagra.

Will I notice the difference between my Sora with thumb shifters and this and is there a massive difference between the 105 and Ultegra.

The only other bike on my radar at the moment is the Planet X carbon with Ultegra for £999. How would you compare the two.

Here is a link to the Orbea albeit the one I have seen is a 2012 model. What do you think folks?

Have you ridden it? That's the only way to really know. Seems a very good deal, I don't think there is much difference between 105 and Ultegra

There are lots of benefits to buying from LBS rather than online

I shall go back tomorrow, they did mention testing it on a turbo trainer rather than letting me go on it outside, presumably so it doesn't get messed up, is that normal? I can understand their point of view not wanting someone messing up their new bike.

NO SLIGHT DIFFERENCE

PROBABLY MORE BIKE FOR THE MONEY IE ORBEA BEING A BETTER FRAME

Sounds like a great deal to be honest.

For £1000, the competition is the planetX bike for £1k, or the Ribble sportive. The Orbea seems to be better value than both.

Yes those wheels are pretty good, better than you'd expect on a £1k bike.

not really ideal for testing a bike, i mean shops take a deposit in the form of id and bank card

I had a PX with 105 and now I have an Orbea Orca with Ultegra and I've ridden an Onix.

Ultegra is not much better than 105. But the Orbea frame will be better than the PX. And the deal braker - Orbea frames have a lifetime guarantee.

Thanks earth, its still there and I am still considering all my options, how did the Onix compare to the Orca?

Sorry, but with the right security, leaving your driving licence or Passport or similar as surety why can't you ride it on the road.

For me, no test ride = no sale. And my last test ride was for a trike that makes that bike look cheap!

Doesn't seem to be an issue with security, seems like they don't want their new bike getting mucky on the road. I understand their point but I am 99% confident if I rode it I would end up buying it so they are potentially losing a sale.

I can't remember now because i got the orca then had a day with an onix on holiday in mallorca.

There was nothing wrong with it though. My px was a bit creaky after 5 years of use.

If you can't test ride it forget it. 9/10 unless its last year stock or priced to clear they will give you a new bike out of a box.

Pants service to be frank The bike whether off the shop floor or out of box needs to be PDI'd. Meaning checked over by a mechanic b

If owner is saying an Onix with 105 was £1700, he's lying.

Onix with 105 should be around £1200.
Orca with 105 is £1600 at my lbs.

I own an Orbea too, lovely bike.
