Yes, the house seems very big today, the first full day without him. First time I've woken up in the afternoon without him somewhere on the bed, taking up a disproportionate amount of space.

I let him down after nearly 18 years of faultless service on his part.

You're being a bit hard on yourself there, longers, I think cats prefer to be on their own when they're unwell or about to go through the final catflap.

You know I just logged in to say the very same thing after reading Longers post. I've seen a few cats shuffle off their mortal coil now and they withdraw deep into themselves. Most times they take up residence in a different corner of the house altogether, it wouldn't have been any different if you'd been there Longers. You gave him 18 good years, you can't do any more.

Over Christmas, we received a call from the cattery where our 2 cats reside while we do the annual trip to my inlaws advising that Wolfie, one of our 2 cats, had died overnight.

We spent the rest of the day gently breaking the news to my 2 very young daughters, saying that at least it wasn't Sebbie, who's much more friendly and plays with them all the time. Not good then that the following day we received another phone call from the cattery advising that they had made a mistake and it was Sebbie who had died!

Fresh tears all around again, and we won't be using that cattery again anytime soon!

We had to put our 14 year old cat Smudge down just the other week (acute liver and kidney failure). We saw this coming and were prepared but it was pretty tough regardless. Must have been horrible for you... odd how we get so connected to animals.

My sympathies.

That's sad RT, I lost many cats to cars and vowed until I had a house well away from traffic I wouldn't have another. He looked like such a lovely cat too.
