If you're using Windows 7 or later, the Windows built-in firewall is pretty well-featured (and obviously compatible with Windows itself).

My personal preference is to use Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials which seem to suffice for me and I have been known to visit some of the outer extremes of the interweb.

Just a thought, you've mentioned firewalls but have you run a virus scan recently? Personally when I'm called in to 'IT troubleshoot' family computers I run an anti-virus scan and then a CCleaner registry scan as a matter of course first, mainly because all sorts of stuff will be cluttering up and interfering with each other. Many viruses and malware programs can throw up problems to any usage which may be aimed at getting rid of them..self preservation.

Make sure there is only one firewall installed at a time, although they can coexist on the same machine, I don't think they like to actually both work. Beyond this you are probably better advised to search more specialist forums...

I had the devil of a job actually uninstalling MacAfee which was 'provided' on my laptop originally, eventually I had to download a program to do just this, although Windows reports that it's gone there are still many parts of the programs left behind. You may find your Virgin software is a rebranded Norton or MacAfee...
