So I've een ridng about on my hybrid bike for the month, commute to work, to fishing locations, just little please trips etc, loving it.

Best buy I've made in years.



I've already found excused to go fiddling with it and spending more money on it than I should have so soon, attatching stuff and planning to but x y and z and figuring out how I can modify things to better suit my needs. It's becoming a good utility bike that I can quickly strip down to a "naked" bike for longer pleasure trips when I don't want to carry much.



Thing is, I've been on a few trips where I have thought to myself "A propper mountain bike would be better suited to this".... today I thought "Hmm, this is a nice ride but I wonder how a propper road bike would feel on this trip". To be honest, what I have now is more than capable of handling all the trips I am likely to take, I've just been looking for excuses to endulge my latest hobby. I can certainly see a few hundred quid getting spent on another bike by the end of the year.



So, have you guys found yourselfs getting maybe a bit carried away with it all and how long did it take to "get the bug"?

Yep, got into audaxing 2 months ago and already got my eyes trained on a Thorn audax bike before the end of the year!

My enthusiasm comes & goes depending on whether I can cycle-commute to work or not. For the last four years or so we have lived (and continue to) an ideal commuting distance from work. In that time I've accumulated three bikes, a trailer and numerous racks, lights, panniers, etc,. We got rid of one of our two cars which helps when it comes to finding the money and gives me more motivation to cycle on those weekend days when Claire has the car.

I keep eyeing up nice bicycles, but to be honest I can't see that I'll ever want more than three (a road bike, a utility bike and a folder) - if I do buy another it will be a replacement rather than an n+1. I think. Currently I'm toying with the idea to change the handlebar config on the road bike (swap brifters for simple brake levers and bar end shifters).

You have discovered the 'n+1' rule of cycling.

The number of bikes you need/want = n+1, where n is the number of bikes you currently own.

(Although in your case it sounds like you are working on n+2 at the moment!)

When my brother and I first got into mountain biking 23 years ago we became obsessed. We talked about bikes constantly to the huge irritation of the rest of our family. We even wrote a spoof letter to our mother saying that we had become sexually obsessed about cycling and had been having bizarre dreams about riding our bikes fast then taking them home and lovingly cleaning their bottom brackets and tweaking their spoke nipples. She actually believed us and recommended we saw a psychologist.....

Well, in the three years or so that I've been cycling as an adult, I seem to have so many bikes of all sorts in my garage that I can no longer fit my car into it. There were also the other bikes I fixed and sold on. If anyone asks, I point out that a cycling addiction is cheaper than cocaine.

lol this is what I mean, I can see myself spending a good 700quid+ on the hypothetical new bike which 5 weeks ago would have sounded insane to me.

But having spent more money on a bike with less stuff (No suspension and all that) I can instantley see what you get for your money.



Dunno if it'd be a MTB or a full-on road bike, so far I've been 90% on tarmac but when I HAVE gone offroad it's been rougher tracks than I originally thought/remembered

I cut over the country fields the other week between my town and one of the villages, all I can say about that at 20-25mph is "bone shaker". Fun though.

Then again yesterday after work I headed out to a lake, 15miles each way, nice little tour, and though a more "road specific" bike would have been good.

That trip also saw my first puncture since getting my bike, facilitating the expense of a shiney new bike pump lol.
