Technically I'm at work. But, like last night and the night before, there's only me here and there's quite literally absolutely nothing for me to do. I'm sitting with my laptop talking to you lot and drinking coffee. I've been doing that, in between reading my book, since I clocked on at 5pm, and I'll be doing it until I go home at midnight-ish. The only problem is that sooner or later someone will realise that I'm being paid to do nothing at all and there won't be a job for me any more, but with any luck work will pick up a bit before then. In the meantime, I think I'll have another coffee.

All I do is shuttle between two cider mills about three miles apart with a tanker. One of the mills has no effluent plant, so I load up the waste from the cider making plant and take it down to the effluent plant at the second mill. For some reason, they've cancelled the night shift who normally make the cider, but no one's told my company that. So I'm sitting in the canteen with my lorry parked outside and nothing to load on to it. And I'm being paid ten quid an hour.

It was like that for months when I was at NW AutoTrader on nights. When I started there intending to stay only a year or two, it was mad busy. Then the internet kicked in. Eventually we were going in at 8pm, doing some fancy ads, some boring ones and then being sent home at midnight. Very nice to have an early night and this went on for months. They got work from other areas, then that died down. I took voluntary redundancy which gave me enough cash to stay in all winter. Great hey, especially as I would have had to retire in the January, with no payment!!!

Its a bit like that where I work.

We're there to make sure everything is working ok.... But nothing ever goes wrong. In fact, we have 2x resiliance in all systems and automatic failover to make sure it doesnt go wrong and contractors to fix any problems with any backup systems....

My old job was like that! (god I miss it!!!!)

As Business Development Manager my job was to, er well develop the business. Trouble was the top boys in the london office were in it for the kudos that their feable office brought. At the multimedia office all I had to do was bring in over £350k of work a year and we all had jobs (had around £300k of annual retainers), so spent hours on CC, watched a movie a day at my desk and went for 1.5 hour bike rides with a fit bird at lunch!!!

Now have gotten all restless and career focussed and moved to another agency I get 5 mins here and there to check CC and the rest of the time I am busy hitting bloody targets and growth models!

Cherish the Silence RT... it wont last forever!
