The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I've measured from centre of crank to top of seat tube and it is 53cm also popped into my LBS and he said it looks fine it wasn't that I was feeling uncomfortable i was just curious
According to the Boardman website that makes it a Medium, with a virtual seat tube of 56cm (the length it would be if it had a horizontal top tube), actual 53cm. So that sounds fine.

As ColinJ says^.
If you look at the 'geometry' diagram on the website the dotted line shows the 'virtual top tube', (but doesn't give a measurement for the actual (sloping) top tube). On the other hand it gives the actual seat tube measurement (53cm - which is what you measured), and it also gives a measurement for a 'conventional' seat tube - 56cm - this is what I call the 'virtual' seat tube - the measurement to the point where the dotted line would meet the seat tube if it was extended upwards. It would be really helpful if there was a universal convention regarding the way frames were measured and described. At the moment it can be really difficult to compare different makes with each other.

I purchased my new boardman cx on Friday and I went for a 53 frame and I am 5ft10" and was advised to go for this frame is this correct any input would be appreciated thanks
If it feels comfortable it matters not a jot. Besides small adjustments could be made to ensure a better fit. If the reach is fine and saddle height leaves enough room them nowt to worry about.
