My older son has dedicated three years of his life to accruing a £12000 debt and totally failing his engineering degree - not even an ordinary degree. He applied for his first job as a junior web site designer a fortnight ago. Had his first interview last week - was called for a second interview on Monday and was offered the job today.

How lucky was that?

Ha! Amateur! My young brother dedicated FOUR years of his life to accruing a £14,000 debt. Not that much different, I hear you say? Well wait until you hear the best part. Two months before starting university, he became eligible to legally start spending a £32,000 compensation cheque from a sports-related injury a few years' previously.

I think that it is a family trait.

Younger son snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by failing to attend sixth form and dropped a couple of grades which meant he was rejected by his Russell League choices for university on results day.

He took a year out and cocked up his re-application for a place at Leeds Metropolitan for a high demand course by failing to submit key documents by a crucial deadline despite written and telephoned requests from the university.

Forty eight hours after the key deadline and still in possession of the unsent key documents he received:

Confirmation of an offer from the university.
Confirmation of his acceptance of a place at the university from UCAS.

He hadn't lifted a finger after deciding not to bother after missing the deadline!

I agree. I used to make good beer money writing engineering students' projects in Fortran for them and they were far from easy.

Presumably receiving such a large sum in damages his injuries were moderately severe or he suffers residual symptoms and his recovery is not going to be complete. Personally having been knocked off and moderately injured recovering compensation I would prefer not to have been knocked off in the first place as my fitness prior was 101%.
