You've been in an office for 11 years and now want to go back to lorry driving.

A question I would ask is are you up to speed with what lorry driving entails in 2014?

I haven't the first idea about the job, but I expect it's changed/evolved to some degree since you stopped doing it.

I have an interview on Thursday morning for a new job, I have been sat in an office for 11 years and have always wanted to go back on the road as a lorry driver, a job in a very good company came up last week for a driver/warehouse op and I applied.............. to my amazement I had a telephone interview and passed with flying colours, now I have a real interview on Thursday, I havent had an interview for years, when I joined DHL it was more of an induction day and there were 10 of us so there was really a fun element to the day.

What should I expect to be thrown at me as I really do want this job, better hours and conditions.

Good luck

Having done the interview from the other side (I used to be a transport manager) I would firstly ensure you wear a shirt and tie. I lost count of the number of possible drivers who turned up for an interview in their scruffs! They were an immediate no for me.

The other thing I would suggest is have lots of examples of situations you have been. All job interviews want examples of things that you answer and you can never have enough stored up!

I would ask why did you stop driving and what makes you want to return.

Excellent question, my answer is, the company I worked for went into administration and closed down soon after, I was given an opportunity to join another company in a completely different role to what I was used to, an office role, which I took up and listened and learned over 12 months, after the initial training I was offered a full contract and have spent the last ten years in the same employment but feel it is time to make the change and go back to what I enjoy most......

Perfect answer !

By the way, the lorry related info from beano etc is undoubtedly far more important then the management guff from the rest of us !

I'm with TMN here, in my experience telephone interviews check if you can do the job/tick the necessary points, face 2 face is about showing who you are and what you do that will set you apart from the rest

Well in my trade (computers / telcomms) any telephone interview is to simply to check it's worth dragging someone in. "setting you apart from the rest" is perhaps over egging it. Can you do the job and are going to be a pain was a steep enough barrier having recruited a couple of dozen people in a hurry not that long ago.

For the avoidance of doubt, i never asked any of the stock questions above, apart form why do want the job.

Ask about company policy and specific driver training driving around vulnerable road users such as cyclists whether their wagons have all safety features to reduce blind spots and risk of running some one over. If not why not? You could devise and cost a scheme of improvements and then implement it. Good luck.
