Quelle Plonquer. Could WVM not judge height? He must have really driven at it.

Hmm, legally any vehicle whose height is more then 9ft should have a sticker in the cab displaying the height - I'd blame the operator not the driver.

What cobblers! (With respect and through the Chair). The route was not for delivery vehicles; the driver was sneaking through using it as a short cut.

A few years ago an Italian articulated lorry got stuck under one of the gates in the medieval walls around Salisbury Cathedral. I reckoned at the time that Italian lorry drivers are probably quite blasé about medieval buildings so took no notice of this one.

When traffic still ran through the barbican of Walmgate Bar, lorries and even buses often* got wedged under it. Eventually they changed it to alternate streams of traffic through the larger later arch in the wall beside the barbican.

*well, I'm sure it happened two or three times in the first three years I lived in York, before the system was changed.

To my shame, I did bump a high roofed Vivaro van into a low arch (a modern one into a housing courtyard) last year. Stupidly, I remembered that the last time we'd hired a Vivaro van, it had gone through fine - but that had been the standard roof version, not the high roof. Result, a dent in the van, but no damage to the building, and me very cross and upset with myself.

I once went under a low railway bridge in Ely (for those that know it) in a transit minibus which should have fitted with 4-5 inches to spare according to the sticker.

Unfortunately, that didn't take the roof rack into account

We nearly did something just as bad .A couple of years back .Took the girls on a cycle ride along Blackpool seafront .Really good family day out .

On leaving the car park .We forgot we had the bikes on the roof .A pedestrian shouted for us to stop .We were inches away from hitting the overhead barrier. We could have wiped out four decent bikes .

Just never thought ,we have been so many times to Blackpool for walks .Just did not think .

We were so grateful to the chap .

But the operator has failed in their duty to legally fit a sign displaying the vehicles height in the cab. Unless of course the vehicle is not 9ft high and/or the sign was displayed and the driver choose to ignore it.

What an idiotic statement.

If anybody knows Redditch, you go up Prospect Hill and under the Redditch Ringway. The bridge said something like 12'3", but Prospect Hill is (strangely) a hill so it might be 12'3" on entry but on exit....

Oh, how people laughed when I got my hired box Luton stuck under it, luckily not too noticeable eye-level damage (sorry, Bromsgrove Car Hire!!). There, after twenty years my conscience is assuaged!!
(Old trick, let the tyres down to get it back out).

How do you know that the operator has failed?

How do you know that the van isn't owner-driven?

And, anyway, why would that absolve the driver of their responsibilities to look out of the freaking windscreen?
