José Rujano, who has achieved fairly few results of note since 2005 (three stages and the GC at the 2006 Clásico Banfoandes and the Venezuelan time trial championship in 2007) is scoring highly in the Vuelta al Táchira at the moment. He has won three stages (both mountain-top finishes and the time-trial), and it looks as though he will finish second on GC at 11 seconds behind José Alarcón.
It is easy to be suspicious of how his form deserts him in Europe (except for that Giro in 2005) and yet revisits him whenever he races in South America. It is possible that he never really took to Europe for whatever reason, but then where did that performance in 2005 come from?
Does anyone have all of the details regarding his doping suspension in 2003? He won Stage 4 of the Clásico RCN but after testing positive he was disqualified, suspended for a month and fined 500 Swiss francs. What substance did he actually test positive for? Why was the suspension so short? In proportion for an unintentional breach? Or the usual lenience from the South American federations in the face of doping?
Seeing the winners of recent Clásicos RCN all in a list is pretty depressing: José Castelblanco, Hernán Buenahora, Libardo Niño, Oscar Sevilla...
