Several times the past couple of weeks I’ve used the cycle path that runs along the beach instead of the road like normal, there have been road works & temporary lights causing huge tailbacks so figured the path would for once be quicker (it is prettier though)
Part of this path has two 'red zones' surface painted red & clearly signed where cyclists have to dismount, there are kiosks, public toilets & direct beach access so obviously an area prone to families meandering..Ok not likely at 7.30 am, but the point is it is still sign posted "Cyclists Dismount" I always follow these sorts of signs... I do not want to be the type of cyclist that gets good cyclists a bad name.
Every day I have encountered the same TWIT on some point of my commute- I would use stronger words but this is a public forum!
The first day I pulled onto the cycle path I could see him approaching, prob 40/50 yards away, I wasn't racing or speeding, just a woman riding her bike to work, about 200 yards later - at the first red zone I dismounted & walked the 40 odd feet, he zoomed past me, with less than an inch to spare, as the path is at least 10 feet wide I felt this totally unnecessary. Once past the red zone I remounted, I could see him in the distance & watched him go straight through the next red zone, even though there where pedestrians on the path that he approached from behind without a warning, one was clearly very startled & visibly saw her jump!
The next day, I encountered him on the 2[sup]nd[/sup] red zone, he again zoomed past, again too close for comfort, The third time was a couple of days later, I was at the footbridge that crosses back into town, again clearly signed Cyclist Dismount, again he ignored the sign, the bridge is just wide enough for two bikes to pass with maybe a few mm’s between handlebars – He tried to ride past me, didn’t even Ping his bell or say excuse me, he clipped my bar ends, did a wobble but he managed to recover from then rode off, causing a lady approaching to flatten herself into the wall!
Then I didn’t see him for several days, our next encounter was at traffic lights a few miles further down the route than before, I was waiting at traffic lights, I was at the front of the queue & in Primary, he shot past the queuing traffic on the outside & nearly sideswiped a car coming from the road on the right. Much beeping & shouting from the driver, the cyclist responded with language that was far from elegant.
Today I took the car, Fridays I collect my dirty clothes & leave fresh stuff for the following week.
Imagine my amusement when driving past the footbridge, and he shot straight out without looking & into my path... I slammed on the brakes, whilst hitting the horn, at which point he looked over his shoulder, gave me the V sign... Then went straight over his handlebars as he hit the pothole!!
I got out, Twit that he is; I still wanted to make sure he was ok... I got a barrage of abuse, several other folk appeared, he was still swearing at me, while trying to pick his VERY mangled, probably irreparable carbon bike up...
What a terrible terrible shame.... I very nearly cried, I really like Bianchi’s!
