That was my thought too, My only conclusion is that like me he had chsoen to use the path because of the roadworks, But there is no excuse for sheer bad ettiquete & manners he displayed.

I have spoken to the police (well local PSCO who patrols outside our school) he has told me that it all on CCTV & he has viewed the footage - I am entirely blameless & that he was inpressed with how quick i reacted & braked my car and avoided hitting the chap, so he should be grateful it's just his nike that got crumpled

Are you tempted to ask him how his bike is the next time you see him? Or think of some subtle comment ... along the lines of "if you cycle like that you'll end up going over the handlebars - and if you are lucky the car will stop in time" (obviously need to make it snappier than that).
