I fixed a problem that my sister had with her wifi dropping connections. It turned out that her cordless phones were using the same channel. I went into the router setup and switched to a different channel and now it is 100% reliable.

You can get an app for your smart phone which will show which channel all the nearby wifi routers are on - this allows you to pick one that no-one is using for your router.
