Holy crapListen to this recording of a BRM V16 from 1953; 600 bhp from 1.5 litres at 12,000 rpm: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=fZMPDCNyQxE
I think this is Nick Mason's car; my son has a book called Into the Red about his car collection, which comes with a CD of the engine noises. When eventually they got it running for one lap it sounded amazing, according to the book an elderly colonel turned up at the race track gates in his Rover having heard the unmistakeable sound from his garden several miles away!

Living near RAF Wittering, they used to come into land directly over the A1. 50 to 100 ft right above you if you hit it right. I had an Open Ascona with a sunroof, one passed over one day when i had the roof open, it made you squeeze your eyes shut for a second with your mouth wide open. What a fantastic noise, everything should be made to sound like that, even your watch.
I've never heard an F1 car live, but at Brands for a Superbike round a decade ago they had a low level fly past by a Tornado and a display by Harrier. The noise from both was awesome, you could feel the ground vibrate as the Harrier hovered about fifty feet above.
Saw my first ever F1 car (a Renault) at Silverstone a couple years ago. The noise is stupifying, incredible. You really have no idea until you're 50 ft away...let alone any closer
