so, this computer has Kaspersky, which I wouldn't have bought, following the struggle with the .dmp files that filled a hard disc, but, wtf, it's up for renewal, so I part with 51 sovs for 24 months and a back up disk.

And guess what. The activation code doesn't work. So I ring Kaspersky and speak to Tom Evershed who has no clue, so he suggests completely uninstalling the existing version and starting again, and he'll send me a fix that will make sure of it............

So I uninstall the old version, and wait for Tom's fix, which doesn't come, so after three hours and then some waiting around on the phone at heaven knows what cost I speak to him again, and he's forgotten all about it, but said his computer had fallen apart on him, and he'll send me the fix and in the mean time try this...which I do but it doesn't work, and he sends me an e-mail to confirm his address, and I send him an e-mail and he has evidently gone home, so my poor computer is sitting, naked, awaiting the arrival of the Trojan hordes, so I grab a thirty day trial of BitDefender which installs itself with the minimum of fuss.

And if the disk doesn't arrive tomorrow I'll have learnt a lesson, and I'll ring up the wretched Kaspersky and ask for my money back, accompanying that with my standard question 'now, can you tell me one thing that you've done right?' Which, thus far, they haven't.

Thankyou for reading this.........

dellzeqq If you decide to kick Kaspersky into touch, download and run the Kaspersky Removal Tool from their site to make sure that all traces of it are removed before you install another AV product (none of these tend to get on with each other). By the way, Microsoft Security Essentials is getting good reviews (yes, I know their previous attempts weren't too impressive) and is free.

I congratulate you on that highly useful interrogative which I shall shamelessly borrow!

£51? I am with Jezston.

After hearing about how Kaspersky has previously ruined your life Dellzeqq (more than once over the last year or so!), I am amazed you bothered giving it another go, especially at that price.

Never had a problem with it myself, but once bitten...and all that.

As Woohoo suggests, Microsoft Live Essentials is very good nowadays and free.

I've run Kaspersky Internet Security for a couple of years without any issues. Doesn't fill my PC with grinding paste like AVG and swept me completely clean of nasties which several freebies had failed to detect.

Mind you, I wouldn't pay £51 for two years. You can get most of their products for £15-ish a year all over the place. Even Staples was under £20.

Sorry to hear of your issues, but like ASC1951 I've used Kaspersky IS for some years with no problems. I bought the 3 computers 24 months licence which is reasonably priced, but if it's still FOC will use the MS Live Essentials package when Kaspersky runs out.

Security essentials is fantastic. I was using AVG free before I got windows 7, and had no troubles with it (well, it let the odd thing slip through). Having used Win 7 since release and MSE since release, I've had zero problems from viruses, and it's very unobtrusive and doesn't eat up resources.

This is coupled with Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript installed. Most secure my computer has ever felt!

I was premature to say I had no issues with it.

Kaspersky IS 2011 now allows Outlook reminders to pop up, even though a) Outlook is 'closed' and b) I have set KIS not to monitor any part of this application.

It's mildly annoying. Anyone know how to stop it?

I haven't paid for AV... errr, ever! There are very good free alternatives out there. The most well known is AVG. I used to have it, but it seems to be getting more and more bloated. I finally gave up on it slowing my machines down to a crawl. Now I use Avira Antivir which seems to do a good job without hogging too many resources. It's free for non-commercial use too, which is nice.
