Keeping out of the ASL

This has to be the worst junction in Sheffield for various RLJ infringements.

The MAJORITY of cyclists coming down this road mount the pavement and turn left - it's true, it is rare to see a cyclist stay on the road and obey the signals, unfortunately.

Then again, it is rare to see a driver obey the signals, they almost always encroach on the ASL

Perhaps this Citroen should be applauded for leaving the ASL clear.

The lights were at red before the Citroen arrived

Any cyclist only had a couple of seconds to get in their lane, as this next, professional driver, sailed through the stop line and blocked access for cyclists

So perhaps its no wonder that cyclists take the pavement when the marked lane and ASL are always so blatantly ignored.

In my opinion ASL just encourage people to filter to the front. But is that the safest place to be? right in front of the first pushy motorist that just wants to get in front of you?
I much prefer to be 2 or 3 cars from the front and i can normally keep up with a car as they set off from the lights.

Where the smeg is that?

Bottom of Broadfield Road, at the junction with London Road. Left takes you towards Queens Road, right takes you to Chesterfield Road.

And yes, it's an odd one, attracts all sorts. I was sat on my bike in the ASZ, minding my own business once, when I heard dickhead WVM behind me yell "Oi, fudge off out the way...". Or something. Whilst the lights were on red.

At that junction, between cars is NOT a good idea as they all bunch up, each turn is tight and leads to another queue, there are no gaps to drive into and everyone drives bumper to bumper

Only safe options are (1) in primary and queue or (2) filter all the way to the front

Anything else and you are squeezed

Well if the ASL is filed like that, what is the point in filtering to the front? There is no space for you and you get squashed.

The point surely is that the ASL *shouldn't* be filled

At 18:45 I wouldn't bother filtering but at 08:15 not filtering is denying the advantages of cycling and the bike as a means of transport - unfortunately its also then impossible to see to the front whether the ASL is clear or not

THe fact is, the ASL is there, and it's cars running the red light (which is what ASL infrigement is) that are causing the danger, not cyclists filtering

I thought it was Wolseley Road..?

(Used to live on Albert Road for 3 years, I know that area and its traffic quite well!)

Stu

Nah, Wolesley Road joins at the next junction if you turn left

My commute takes me right past that on London Road, I tend to look at the pigeons living in the building with loose roof tiles on the corner. It's the bit of my commute where I see traffic and other cyclists.
