Kindle, other ebook or the real thing?

I prefer the feel of a book, and the smell, electronics cant replicate that.

When I go touring I have various PDFs and guides on the readers, BUT muy main reference books that always go with me is a Muirheads 1926 blue gide with the original owner's comments, bus tickets and newspaper cuttings included

Oh yeah - and to the OP, both. Kindle & books. Why do these things always turn into either/ors?

After originally swearing I would never have a Kindle, when my wife bought me one, I used nothing else for a long time, but have recently read a few paper books again and it makes a pleasant change. Each has their place for me so its not really an either / or, just the way I phrased the question.

Kindle for sure, fantastic for touring, even doubles as a free internet browser wherever there is a mobile signal. Charge lasts for weeks especially if you restrict your browsing.

My aunt and uncle used to run a newsagents/bookshop and they had this man that came in every day and read a bit of a particular book. I forget what it was now but it was a large novel, about three inches thick. This carried on for some time, he had taken to using an unused cigarette paper as a bookmark. They waited until he he had reached the last chapter and removed the book from the shelf and put it in the storeroom before opening up in the morning.

The man came in as usual at around 10 o' clock and spent all morning looking everywhere in the shop for "his" book.

When I had a record shop kids used to come in, ask for recommendations, ask to hear stuff then agreed they liked it and declare they'd go home to nick it off BitTorrent.

Are you aware of any non-Apple product that will play AAC which won't play AACs purchased from iTunes? The format allows additional fields to be defined which are simply ignored by devices which don't use them.

I've had several e-readers (Sony) and I've worked my way from the e-ink Kindles up to a Kindle Fire HD. I was very slow to go from a e-ink screened kindle (only book reader) to a fire as it's essentially a tablet with Amazon's modified Operating system. This means that it's able to run Android games etc. Play music and Video.

I was worried that with this functionality that I'd stop reading books. This thankfully hasn't happened.

I don't miss real paper books. This was another worry.

If you want to just read books the kindle paper white may be the way to go. It's a backlit e-ink touch sensitive screen. These screens are viewable in full sunlight and because of the nature of the screen the battery's last for weeks.

If you want the above, plus colour and the ability to play music, video, games, and browse the internet the Fire range is the device of choice. While like all tablet's it's touch sensitive colour screen this eats batteries, playing games, video's etc will use more battery then just reading books.

Mark 1 Kindles for me and Mrs Salad. Very handy indeed when away in the campervan, and the adjustable text function is a boon in low light.

I do occasionally browse the charity shops for paperbacks, but mostly buy as e-books to the KIndle....
