One of my friends has just complained that she's getting a sore bum and can I recommend a good make of padded shorts. Personally I rarely find I need them so any recommendations from the ladies of the forum? I've heard Corrine Dennis mentioned before.

I'm also wondering whether it's the saddle that's actually the problem. Do you think this is more likely?

Without seeing the saddle it's difficult to know. If it's really padded/or not padded enough it could be making her sore.
How far is she riding? For anything over about 10 miles I'd rather have padding even though my saddle is very comfy.
I wear Endura shorts (available in most shops and online), and Ground Effects (from NZ, only online).
Shorts are difficult though as one woman's dream padding is another's nightmare!
Sorry, not a very helpful post really!

Thanks Baggy. That is helpful. Her commute is about 10 miles each way and she rides a Specialized Dolce so I think the saddle will be one of the Body Geometry ones. I'll suggest she goes and tries on some Endura shorts. There must be a stockist somewhere round here.

Mrs rich p is a big fan of the Corinne Dennis shorts and bought another pair last week. She went for the ones that dry quicker for touring washing although I'd have to ask her for the details. She also buys tops from them too as they don't only cater for skinny size 6 and 8's.

Coincidentally I used to have a Dolce - and agree it could be that - it killed my bum! Even if I had a couple of days off the bike I always had two tender spots on my sit bones. Changed it for a Selle Italia Lady Genuine gel (with a cut out) and my botty was much happier...

How long has she been cycling? Could just be beginners bum. I rarely use padding, but when I do I use the Endura CoolMax ladies boxers ( got a size up from normal which was just as well as they would have been tight round the thigh otherwise)http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9375
I've also tried the Endura padded clickfast shorts. They were ok, but I found the boxers comfier.

My wife has a used the ladies BG saddle for the last 3 yrs and is increasingly unhappy with it. So in desperation last week she decided to try out my Spec Toupe on the turbo and was quite surprised by it. So, this weekend she is doing a weekend in the saddle on a male BG Toupe.

WRT to padded shorts. She likes her Nalini ones.

I tried the bg saddles, they were horrid! Very glad I went for the charge ladle, especially as it was considerably cheaper!

As for shorts, a lot of people I know seem to be very fond of altura - haven't tried them myself as I love my trek ones so much (which are apparently made by nike, so I'm going to get some of them when mine fall apart I think).

Whereas I like the BG saddles - I have a windle on one bike and an ariel on the other bike (now that they make it in a 155 width). When I was having my bottom measured they suggested going up a size if your position was anything but full on stretched out. I've got a Trans Am something that I hate with vengeance!!! That bike has hardly seen any outings until I got the new saddle.

Shorts wise I have Altura (just below knee length things), and new this winter (sales - like a bargin) so yet to be tried: scott and fox? (Can't remember and I'm waiting for the slightly nicer weather to try them out.

My friend has been commuting to work on a mountain bike for at least a year so it shouldn't be newbie sore bum but she recently graduated to a Dolce road bike so I suspect the problem is with the saddle rather than shorts. I'm going to suggest she swaps the saddles round and see whether that cures the problem.

I get on fine with my bottom of the range BG, even without padding, so must be weird!
